Do you remember when the author Stephen King visited Billerica? In 1987, King came Billerica for a benefit to help local author Andre Dubus, who had been struck by a car in 1986 while helping two motorists, a brother and sister, whose car was disabled on the side of the highway. An oncoming car swerved into the breakdown lane. The brother was killed instantly but the sister survived because Dubus pushed her out of the way. Dubus was critically injured; both his legs were crushed. His right leg was amputated and he lost the use of his left leg. To help Dubus with mounting medical bills, his literary friends Kurt Vonnegut and John Updike held a special literary benefit, which King attended, among his other visits to the local area. At left, King shows his press smile for Sun photographer Rose Marston. Top right, King sits with Academy Award-winning screenwriter and author John Irving and recalls an anecdote about a review of his book, “Christine,” that frustrated him with its misinterpretation. Bottom right, King takes the microphone for a reading at an event.
